Winter Pool Maintenance Tips
In order to properly prepare a swimming pool for the winter,
the owner must first ensure that the water is clean and free of solid
particles. Leaves, beetles, pine needles and other debris will have to be carefully
vacuumed. A very good time to start the winterizing process is autumn, right
before the leaves start to change their color, to prevent them from falling
into the water.
Treating the water before the cold season is the next
essential step in the winter pool maintenance process. A combination of concentrated
chlorine and alkalizer will ensure that the water stays clean until late in the
spring, when the warm season begins. Many manufacturers offer winterizing kits,
containing all the necessary chemicals in a single package, ready for
application. These chemicals are typically more concentrated variants of
chlorine, algaecides and alkalizing substances that prepare water for the cold
months. Some chemicals require filters to be turned on when they are introduced
in the water, to prevent the apparition of spots on the pool liner.
Once the chemicals have been added, the water level in the
pool should be lowered to a few centimeters below the level of skimmers and
discharging holes, and the pool has to be covered.
Alternatively, the pool can also be emptied completely for
the winter and covered with a waterproof tarpaulin to prevent water and snow
accumulation. However, in time, this option can damage the liner or the mosaic,
because of the exposure to freeze-thaw cycles.
